Preface:

ItwasearlyDecember,andtheairwascrispandcold.Theskieswereadeepshadeofgrey,andthegroundwasbarrenandbleak.Theleaveshadallfallenfromthetrees,andtheonlysoundthatcouldbeheardwasthesoundofwindhowlingthroughtheemptybranches.Everyonewasbundledupintheirwarmestclothes,huddledinsidetoescapethebitingcold.Butforoneyounggirl,theonsetofwinterbroughtwithitasenseofexcitementandwonder.Shehadbeenwaitingforthismomentallyear–thefirstsnowfalloftheseason.

Asshelookedoutherwindow,shecouldseethesnowflakesswirlingthroughtheairliketinyballerinas.Theydancedaroundeachotherinagracefulwaltz,eachoneuniqueandintricateinitsdesign.Shewatchedinaweastheylandedsoftlyontheground,transformingthedulllandscapeintoawinterwonderland.

Withoutasecondthought,shebundledupinherwarmestcoatandboots,eagertoexplorethismagicalnewworld.Asshesteppedoutside,shewasimmediatelyhitwithawaveofcoldairthatseemedtoseepintoeveryinchofherbody.Butshedidn'tmind.Infact,sherelishedinthefeelingofbeingaliveandpresentinthismoment.

Whenshefinallyarrivedbackhome,shekickedoffherbootsandsettledintoacozychairbythefireplace.Sheclosedhereyesandletoutacontentedsigh,feelinggratefulfortheexperienceshehadjusthad.Sheknewthatshewouldneverforgetthisfirstsnowofwinter,orthesenseofwonderandjoythathadaccompaniedit.

Assoonasshesteppedoutside,sheknewthathersenseshadnotdeceivedher.Theworldwasdifferentnow,transformedbythemagicofthefirstsnowfall.Thetreeswerecoveredinalayerofsnow,sparklinginthesunlightlikejewels.Thegroundwaspristinewhite,untouchedbyfootprintsorothersignsofhumanexistence.

Shedecidedtogobacktothepark,toseeifshecouldfindanymoremagichiddeninthesnow.Asshewalked,shefeltasenseofanticipationbuildinginsideher.Shewasn'tsurewhatshewaslookingfor,butsheknewthatitwasouttheresomewhere.

Whenshearrivedatthepark,shesawthatitwascoveredinfootprintsnow.Thesnowmanthatsheandherfriendshadbuiltthedaybeforewasnowjustapileofsnow,nolongermagnificentorawe-inspiring.Butstill,shesearched,hopingtofindsomethingthatwouldreignitethatsenseofwonderandmagic.

Andso,asshesatbythefirethatnightonceagain,sippingherhotcocoaandreadingstories,sheknewthatthisfirstsnowofwinterhadchangedherforever.Ithadshownherthateveninthedarkestandcoldestofseasons,therewasstillmagictobefoundineverymoment–allshehadtodowasopenherheartandlookforit.
